Why see a Gastroenterology Specialist?
A gastroenterologist specialises in diagnosing and managing conditions that affect the digestive system including the oesophagus, stomach, bowel, liver and pancreas. You may be referred for a specialist consultation if you’re experiencing ongoing digestive symptoms or if your GP recommends further investigation.
Common reasons to see a gastroenterologist include abdominal pain, bloating, reflux, changes in bowel habits, unexplained weight loss, difficulty swallowing, anaemia, or long-standing digestive issues that haven’t improved with initial treatment.
During your appointment, the specialist will assess your symptoms, review any previous tests, and determine whether further investigations such as blood tests, imaging, gastroscopy or colonoscopy are required to diagnose the cause and guide your treatment.
What to Expect
- Preparation: Bring your GP referral, Medicare card, and any recent test results to help the specialist assess your symptoms.
- Consultation & examination: Your gastroenterologist will discuss your symptoms, review your medical history, and perform an examination if needed.
- Diagnostic planning: If further tests are required such as blood tests, imaging, gastroscopy or colonoscopy, the specialist will explain and arrange these.
- Treatment & management: You will receive a tailored treatment plan, which may include medication, dietary advice, or recommended procedures.
- Follow-up care: Follow-up appointments may be arranged to review results and monitor your progress.

When should I see a gastroenterologist?
